Cricket Wireless to Become a National Carrier?

Cricket Wireless is known as one of the best pre-paid carriers in the country. However, this company serves 5.3 million prepaid customers in select communities in 25 states and it is projected to expand in the next few years. Well, Cricket Wireless may decide t enter the national scene in the near future.

Al Moschner, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Cricket Wireless recently told Kent German of CNet that,

It's about national reach. An important part of our strategy is to become national. We're not going to stop building out our own infrastructure, but given that real growth in the industry is with prepaid users, we need to be a national carrier today. And more importantly, if you believe that a significant shift of sales is moving to a national carrier footprint, the only way for us to be relevant is to be national.

Moschner also talked about smartphones, music services, 4G plans and other endeavours.

T-Mobile Wireless Network Outage

A number T-Mobile customers were recently alarmed when they found that they were unable to contact family and friends visa their handsets. Text and voice communication across the country were being disrupted for unknown reasons.

Fortunately, the company moved quickly to fix the T-Mobile current outage. Rapid response teams were mobilized to restore service as quickly as possible to appease customers who are experiencing voice and data outages.

The company did not mention the scope or severity of the T-Mobile current outage. However, a press statement did indicate that approximately 5 percent of T-Mobile customers are experiencing service disruptions.

After several hours, another announcement was released indication that the T-Mobile current outage has been fixed. The rapid response team has done its job and all voice and data services had be restored.

Unfortunately, the cause of the incident is still being investigated. This probably means that the cause is still unknown and the outage may may happen again.

T-Mobile appears to be on shaky ground. This problem occurred recently after the serious service interruption for its Sidekick line of devices. I hope that the carrier can fix its problems and focus on providing quality service.

Sprint to Purchase the iPCS Wireless Network

The powerful Sprint wireless network is planning to gobble up another minor carrier. The major US wireless service provider is in the process of assimilating Virgin Mobile and just announced plans to buy its affiliate, iPCS.

iPCS wireless is a company that has acquired exclusive right to sell wireless mobility communications network products and services under the Sprint brand in 81 markets including markets in Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio and Tennessee. This regional wireless network serves an estimated 710,200 subscribers.

Sprint and iPCS has been a fixture of the wireless network news lately as the regional network has sued the larger network over a number of reasons, including breach of contract. However, as part of the merge all of the litigation concerning both companies will cease.

The Sprint acquisition of iPCS is ertimated to involve $831 million. The deal also involves assumption of $405 million of net debt. The deal is expected to be completed by late 2009 or early 2010.

AT&T 3G Network Upgrade Deployed!

AT&T has rolled out the new HSPA 7.2 speed for its nationwide 3G wireless network. I blogged about the plans for the AT&T 3G wireless network upgrade last June. It appears that the provider has successfully tested the improved speeds for its network.

The new and improved network with HSPA 7.2 data speeds will be launched by the end of the year in:

Charlotte
Chicago
Dallas
Houston
Los Angeles
Miami

According to the carrier's plans, the AT&T 3G wireless network upgrade with HSPA 7.2 data speeds is expected to be in effect in 25 of the top 30 markets. One of the goals is also to achieve the roll out in 90 percent of its 3G network area by the end of 2011. The company is also hoping to expects to have six HSPA 7.2-compatible smartphones available by the end of the year.

What are the updates involved in this major upgrade. Well, the carrier is also upgrading the backhaul connections at each tower location and providing each tower with faster data connections to the network and the Internet. This upgrades will allow the towers to HSPA 7.2 and the even faster LTE technology in the future.

John Stankey, president and CEO of AT&T Operations describe this 3G wireless network upgrade:

“Our deployment of HSPA 7.2 and supporting backhaul connectivity will enable our customers to continue to ride the leading edge of emerging devices and thousands of mobile applications. Our network is based on the predominant technology platform used by operators worldwide and has been tested by today’s most popular devices. FCC to Investigate US wireless Network Operators

I previously blogged about the possible government review on wireless network operators on possible anti-competitive practices. Well, it appears that the FCC has already made it's move.

The FCC or Federal Communications Commission has decided to launch a formal inquiry into the wireless industry. The agency will look into the business practices being used in the industry. It will also examine how the large wireless network operators affect consumer choice.

The target of this FCC inquiry will be the major wireless network operators, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless.

Exclusive deals between handset makers and carriers will also be targeted by this FCC inquiry into the the wireless network industry. Apparently, rural carriers have expressed their strong opposition to these exclusive deals. They do not have enough clout to make deals to carry the most popular phones so such practices should be illegal.

The FCC also wants to gain an insight into the general state of the wireless industry to see if current conditions in the wireless market allow for new entrants. If the the major wireless network operators have too much power then a new entrant into the industry have little chance of survival.

The results of this FCC inquiry into the the wireless network industry will be used as a framework for other investigations into other commercial industries. Other sectors such as cable and broadband are also scheduled to be examined by the government.

New FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski released this statement regarding the inquiry,

"I hope the new wireless competition report will help set a standard for fact-based, analytically deep analysis of the mobile industry. It is essential that the commission develop policies that encourage a new generation of innovators, working with new tools, on new platforms, and having an extraordinary impact on our economy and society"

Well, this is certainly interesting. The wireless industry has always defended its practices, pointing out that they offer consumers a wide range of choices of network operators, handsets, and service plans. We'll see if the inquiry brings any improvements that would benefit all consumers.

Clearwire Brings WiMax 4G Wireless Networks to 10 New Markets

It appears that Sprint and Clearwire are pushing hard to roll out it's nationwide 4G wireless network. Perhaps they are feeling the pressure from the nearing launch of Verizon's LTE wireless network.

Clearwire has just announced that it's WiMax 4G wireless network will open in ten more market. The company uses Sprint Nextel's 2.5GHz spectrum to bring high speed 4G technology to the US market. These newly announced markets will begin to operate starting on September 1

The company offers WiMax technology which offers faster speeds than current 3G wireless technologies. The service provider boasts that WiMax can offer up to 4 megabits per second for downloads and 500 kilobits per second for uploading. These figure makes the technology more than twice as fast as the 3G wireless connection. This wireless network also provides wider coverage than other high-speed wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi..

Here are the new markets that will receive broadband services from the Clearwire Wimax 4G wireless network:

Amarillo, Texas
Corpus Christi, Texas

Sprint Nextel to Acquire Virgin Mobile for $483 million

It looks like like two known wireless network operators will merge to form a larger entity. After acquiring Nextel, Sprint has made a deal to merge with Virgin Mobile.

Sprint has proudly announced that its boards of directors have approved a definitive agreement to acquire Virgin Mobile USA for a total equity value of approximately $483 million. This means that the wireless network operator will assume control of Virgin and its 5.2 million customers.

So is this the end of Virgin Mobile? Well, no. Sprint says that Virgin Mobile will be maintained as a separate brand and offered along side its Boost Mobile pre-paid service. So the bitter rivals in the prepaid service market will now serve one master.

The CEO of Virgin Mobile USA will continue to run the Virgin Mobile division, and will report directly to Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.

But why did Sprint decide to acquire Virgin Mobile? Here are the reasons that the company revealed on its Sprint Nextel-Virgin Mobile merger announcement:

Strengthens Sprint’s position in the fast growing prepaid segment.
Enhances cross selling of full suite of Sprint products and services across a larger target audience.
Free cash flow accretive for Sprint before synergies.
Synergies to be derived from general and administrative reductions, operational efficiencies, and streamlined distribution.
Sprint gains deeper managerial talent with additional expertise in the prepaid segment

The Sprint Nextel-Virgin Mobile merger is expected to close in late 2009 or early 2010.

Well, this development is certainly interesting. I thought that Sprint was on its way down but this move seems to breath new life to the company. Verizon Wireless also recently acquired Alltel so perhaps AT&T and T-Mobile will also make a move.

Verizon Wireless Proposes Change to Existing Roaming Rule

Here's an interesting update to users who like to roam outside the confines of their carrier's wireless network. Verizon Wireless has offered a bold proposition to change the existing rules on roaming.

So why would Verizon Wireless propose the existing roaming rule? Well, pressure from the government has encouraged or forced the carrier to propose a change to the current laws regarding roaming.

Roaming is a term coined to describe a practice that involves extending of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered.

The existing roaming law allows wireless network operators the choice to refuse from providing roaming services to competing companies that own spectrum in a given market but have yet to build out a network there. However, minor and regional wireless network operators claim that the existing roaming rule negatively affects customers, who are unable to roam in those regions and will be left without service.

Verizon Wireless announced that it will support legislation that requires it to provide roaming services in this type of circumstance. However, there's a catch. Big Red will only support legislation that sets a 2 year limit to the requirement.

So how will this play out? The letter containing the proposal to change the existing roaming rule has already been sent to several senators. However, considering how politics work, it may take months before actual changes to the rule are made.

Sprint and Clearwire Launches WiMAX Wireless Network in Las Vegas

The WiMAX wireless network and its services will soon open in Las Vegas has officially launched the . Sprint and ClearwireWiMAX wireless network in Sin City and services will begin in the metropolitan area on August 1.

The folks in Las Vegas can avail of the WiMAX wireless network with average speeds ranging between 3 and 6 services for as low as 20/month. Sprint boasts that WiMAX can offers peak downlink speeds of more than 10MbpsMbps.

Sprint and Clearwire also announced that the WiMAX wireless network will be launched in more market's by the end of the year. This high speed network will also go live this year in:

Seattle

Samsung also announced a WiMAX-enabled mobile Internet device that well be available starting on August 1. the Samsung Mondi is reportedly the the most advanced Mobile WiMAX-enabled handheld device in the U.S.

This device offers WiFi, GPS, 3 megapixel camera, a QWERTY keypad, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, Opera 9.5 and a customizable set of widgets on top of Windows Mobile. It is expected to be be available in Vegas-area Best Buy and Clearwire outlets starting August 1st.

AT&T Wireless Responds Governemnt Review

A few weeks ago, I blogged about the Department of Justice has begun looking into large U.S. telecommunication and wireless networks for possible anti-competitive practices. AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. were said to be the main target of the government review.

Apparently, Sen. Herb Kohl's congressional panel is in-charge of reviewing potential anti-competitive behaviors of the country's largest providers of wireless network services. There are concerns over texting prices, roaming disputes, disputes over spectrum and exclusive access to popular phones.

However, AT&T is not going down without a fight. The carrier immediately decided to make a response to this information on the anti-competitive practices review to be conducted by the DOJ.

James Cicconi, an AT&T senior executive vice president, delivered a statement in defense of his company. The AT&T senior executive vice president indicated that charges of anti-competitive practices by US wireless networks are unfounded. He stressed that the prices of U.S. wireless are much lower than in any other major industrialized country.

Cicconi also argued that exclusive handset arrangements are standard practices. Exclusive access allows a carrier and a manufacturer to split the high cost of marketing. The case is similar with early termination fees that help wireless networks to recoup money spent discounting handsets.

Well, this is certainly interesting. I hope that a review will bring about pro-consumer policies. I wonder why Verizon Wireless did not respond to this anti-competitive practices review. AT&T decided to take action quickly and their response make sense.

However, an inquiry into practices will only help consumers in my opinion.

Ericsson to Assume Responsibility for Sprint's CDMA and iDEN Wireless Networks

Sprint recently announced a wireless network services agreement with global leader Ericsson. This agreement is called the "Network Advantage" effectively allows Ericsson to take over the day-to-day services, provisioning and maintenance for the Sprint-owned CDMA, iDEN and wireline networks.

The Sprint "Network Advantage" deal is reportedly beneficial to both parties. Sprint will gain operational efficiencies while Ericsson will be able to expand its wireless network services business in North America.

The carrier believes that the “Network Advantage” deal will catapult the company to elite status in wireless and wireline network effectiveness. Sprint’s Steve Elfman, President of Network Operations and Wholesale, released this statement:

“No other U.S.-based carrier has followed through on the business-enhancing vision inherent in Network Advantage. Our best-ever network performance will become even better by leveraging Ericsson’s world-class leadership in network services, their proprietary tools, and the knowledge of more than 30,000 dedicated and highly-specialized service professionals to power Sprint’s Now Network.”

The “Network Advantage” agreement between Sprint and Ericsson will involve between $4.5 billion and $5 billion (USD) over the seven-year term of the contract. Around 6,000 Sprint employees will begin performing their network functions as Ericsson employees sometime in the 3rd quarter.

Here are the key elements of the “Network Advantage” agreement between Sprint and Ericsson:

Sprint retains full ownership and control of its network assets, and solely owns network strategy and investment decisions.
Customers will continue to work directly with Sprint employees as their primary contact, as Sprint retains full control of the customer experience, customer technical support and services review.
Sprint retains technology and vendor selections.
Ericsson assumes responsibility for the day-to-day services, provisioning and maintenance for the Sprint-owned CDMA, iDEN and wireline networks.
Ericsson will optimize Sprint’s multi-vendor inventory of assets such as spare parts and transmission equipment, and provide processes and tools for managing the national network platforms and operational support systems.
The transferred employees will become part of Ericsson Services Inc., a wholly-owned Ericsson subsidiary based in Overland Park, KS, a move that retains jobs in the United States. No force reductions are currently contemplated as a result of this agreement.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless Anti-Competitive Practices Review

Trouble might be brewing for both AT&T and Verizon Wireless. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Department of Justice has begun looking into large U.S. telecommunication companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. to see if any abuse of market power is happening.

Now, there is no cause for alarm. This process is still very much in its infancy and an actual investigation may not be even be opened. However, it is interesting to see that the government is looking into the matter. This tough stance by the DOJ appears to be a reflection of the Obama administration's aggressive stance on antitrust enforcement.

The AT&T and Verizon Wireless anti-competitive practice review seems to have originated from suspicions within the DOJ. Apparently, the massive growth achieved by these wireless network operators have led some to question if it might detrimental effects on smaller competitors and consumers.

Large wireless network operators like AT&T and Verizon Wireless have huge power and influence in the market, this means that they are capable of stifling their competition.

The AT&T and Verizon Wireless anti-competitive practice review will also focus on other areas like the exclusive handset deals. Some wireless network operators have exclusive rights to some high-end handsets and it might be prevent smaller carriers from offering a fair challenge. For instance, AT&T has the iPhone and Verizon Wireless has the BlackBerry Storm.

The DOJ is also looking into the limitations on what third-party companies can do using carriers' data networks. Allegedly, some wireless network operators are blocking certain media download and VoIP apps to prevent legitimate competition from rival services.

Well, I think this news is very interesting. An investigation would expose some unfair practices by the carriers. If there are any. I would really want the government to look at exclusive handset deals. Maybe it would lead a Verizon subscriber like me getting a CDMA iPhone.

AT&T Wireless Network Femtocells to be Launched This Year

AT&T has revealed that is is preparing to release femtocell technology this year. Gordon Mansfield, the company's executive director for radio access network delivery stated that this new wireless network product will be available to consumers within a few weeks.

Mansfield said:

"we will expand [the current trials] into a marketing trial of the AT&T-branded 3G Microcell, which will be open to customers through our AT&T stores…in a handful of cities. We're on track for a full national launch by the end of 2009."

However, many consumers are not very familiar with femtocell wireless network technology. So what are femtocells?

Femtocells are small base stations provide enhanced cellular network coverage in places such as homes or offices. They appear similarly to Wi-Fi routers. This technology use residential DSL or cable broadband to connect up to 5 handsets to a wireless carrier's network.

With the help of this revolutionary technology, users can extends the coverage of wireless service providers to residential or small business environments. The process does not require the service of expensive cellular towers to achieve this task.

The benefits of using Femtocell technology go both ways. The consumers and wireless service operators can gain when using this technology. Service providers can improve coverage, reduce backhaul traffic and stimulate 3G usage via femtocells. On the other hand, Consumers will get reduced call charges and enhanced indoor coverage.

Verizon Wireless and Alltel Pays $30 Million to Florida Subscribers

FCC Approves Verizon-Alltel Merge!

Here's an update to the series of post on the Verizon-Alltel merge. In my last post, I bloggged about the decision of the US Department of Justice to allow Verizon Wireless to buy Alltel as long as the wireless network operator complies with the requirements. The Verizon-Alltel merge takes another step towards completion with the blessing of the FCC.

The FCC commissioners held a special meeting to discuss the Verizon-Alltel merge after it had been approved by the DOJ. The FCC has many considerations to look into during this Verizon-Alltel merge meeting including the complaints raised by regional wireless network operators and consumer groups. Regional wireless network operators have appealed against the Verizon-Alltel merge because of the unresolved issues on roaming, spectrum concentration and handset exclusivity.

However, the FCC commissioners in charge of the Verizon-Alltel merge voted unanimously in favor of the deal. Five FCC commissioners voted to allow the Verizon-Alltel merge. Verizon Wireless must fulfill some conditions before it can fully acquire Alltel. For example, the FCC requires that Verizon Wireless must honor Alltel's existing roaming agreements with other wireless network operators for four years. The major wireless network operator must also divest spectrum in 22 states to complete the Verizon-Alltel merge.

Well, I think that this Verizon-Alltel merge approval is a victory for Verizon Wireless. With the Verizon-Alltel merge approval of the FCC, Verizon is one step closer to being the largest wireless network in the United States. A few daya ago, I posted about the regional wireless network operators that opposes the Verion-Alltel Union because of the unresolved issues on roaming, spectrum concentration and handset exclusivity. But I've just found out that the DOJ has given its blessing on Verizon Wireless acquisition of Alltel Wireless.

According to PhoneScoop, the US Department of Justice has approved Verizon Wireless's purchase of Alltel Wireless for $28 billion. However, the wireless network operator must divest its wireless assets in 100 markets encompassing 22 states.

If the FCC rule in favor of the Verizon Wireless- Alltel union then the commission will probably call for wireless divestitures similar to those made by the DOJ. If all goes well, then Verizon Wireless will merge with Alltel Wireless to become the biggest wireless network operator in the US.

Regional Wireless Network Opposses Verion-Alltel Union

The news about Verizon Wireless' plan to acquire Alltel first surfaced during the first week of June. It was a significant development in the wireless network industry as it would make Verizon the biggest American wireless carrier. However, many expected that the union will not go smoothly as many obstacles have to be cleared before Alltel completely merges with Verizon Wireless. Another obstacle to the Alltel-Verizon merge have surfaced as some rural or regional carriers have declared their strong opposition.

In an effort to stop Verizon from Acquiring Alltel, some rural wireless network operators have sent a letter to FCC. The letter addressed to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin requested that the commission deny the approval of Verizon Wireless's acquisition of Alltel.

The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote on this issue ion Nov. 4.

These members of the groups that oppose the merge believe that it would be against the interests of the public. They also feel that allowing Verizon to acquire Alltel without properly addressing the unresolved issues on roaming, spectrum concentration and handset exclusivity is anti-competitive and anti-consumer.

If the FCC voted to approve the merger, then Verizon Wireless will surpass AT&T as the biggest wireless network operator in the US. However, the FCC will need to address the concerns expressed by the regional carriers and wireless consumer groups before the Verizon-Alltel union becomes a reality.

I thinks its good that these groups have publicly expressed their stand on the issue. If the FCC do not heed their concerns, then it might be possible that a lot of problems will surface from the union between two major wireless carriers. Finally the first Android phone has come. After months of speculation, rumors and info leaks, the first Android phone will finally enter the mobile phone market.

A few days ago, I blogged about the Wall Street Journal saying that T-Mobile and HTC will unveil the G1 today. T-Mobile confirmed that report and the wireless network has made good on that promise. Soon Android fans will get their hands on the device that they have waited for months.

Let's get close and personal with the newly announced T-Mobile G1. The official photos of the first ever phone to run on the Google Android OS have been released. I think the device looks great. It may not look as sexy as the iPhone but it looks stylish and sleek. It resembles the iPhone with its iconic large touchscreen display.

The T-Mobile G1 will be a great device for texting and email because its display to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Obviously, a full QWERTY keyboard will make composing email and text messages fast and easy. This device will also sport a track ball that will make it easy to navigate the device's menus and applications.

The new T-Mobile device is packed with high powered features. The first Android phone will have a full HTML browser and an HTML email client. The T-Mobile Google mobile phone will also have a beta client for the Android Market with several pre-installed applications.

Since this device runs on an Operating System made by Google, it's only natural that it will be highly integrated with Google's services. The T-Mobile Android cell phone will also provide customers with one-touch access to Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps Street View, and other Google services.

Sprint Wimax Update and Other Wireless Network News

Here's some update for those who have been waiting for Sprint's WiMax network. According to Gearlog.com, Sprint has confirmed that they will proceed with the plan to launch the first commercial WiMax network in Baltimore this month.

Sprint's XOHM WiMax network will not be focused on mobile phone services. This wireless network will also offer services to laptops with integrated wireless and plug-in modem units. Users will be able to get speeds that will be faster than 3G networks from the yet to be launched WiMax wireless network.

There have also been reports that Sprint is willing to sell its iDEN network to any buyer with the right offer. The wireless network operator has expressed that it might sell the iDEN network and will seriously consider any reasonable offer. If the right opportunity does not present itself, then Sprint will hold onto the iDEN network.

T-Mobile USA 3G Wireless Network

Let's move on now to the Google Android phone that will be on T-Mobile. The wireless carrier has confirmed that it will indeed announce the first Android phone on Tuesday, September 23. This anticipated announcement will be held at a special event in NYC.

The pricing info on the first mobile phone top run on the Google Android OS has also been leaked. The sources say that the Google Android phone will be offered to customers for $200 with contract. Interestingly, the rumors say that the Android phone will also have the the Google brand in its body.

Will T-Mobile Unveil the Android Phone on Sept. 23?

I got some exciting news for all of you who have been waiting for the arrival of the Google Android phone. I've just read a Wall Street Journal article informing readers that their sources have reported that the Android phone may be unveiled on the 23rd of September . That's only about a week from now.

Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that we will be able to get our hands on the Android phone next week. HTC and T-Mobile will offer the Android phone in October even though they may unveil it next week. The Wall Street Journal article also did not indicate any price for the device so we won't have any idea if we can afford it. Well, October is only a few weeks away so we can afford to wait.

The article also confirmed some of the reports and rumors on the first phone to run on the Android platform. WSJ confirmed that the Android phone will have a generous touchscreen display. I think every high-end handset should have a touchscreen display to compete with the current crop of high-level handsets.

The WSJ article also confirmed that the fiorst Android phone will have a "a swivel-out full keyboard and a BlackBerry-style trackball to help with navigation." I think this is great. The trackball will make navigation easier and it's a popular feature especially among BlackBerry users. The Qwerty keyboard is also a great asset. It makes takes entry faster and easier but it may add to the handset's bulk.

The Android phone will be manufactured by HTC Corp. and it will be named the HTC Dream. However, T_Mobile is giving it the name "G1." HTC expects to ship 600,000 to 700,000 units of the smart phone this year. This estimate bis a bit high considering it will hit the stores in October and it doesn't carry the same hype as the iPhone. However, if HTC can come up with a great device and T-Mobile can market it well, then that figure may be reached.

I guess there's nothing to do but wait for the expected launch on Sept. 23. T-Mobile doesn't have a signature device and the Android phone will surely bring prominence to the wireless network provider.

Here's a slew of new phones and services from the major US mobile phone carriers. Let's begin with AT&T.

AT&T

Some documents released by the FCC indicate that the AT&T logo was on the cover of a version of Nokia's 6650 clamshell 3G smartphone. This smartphone runs the latest version of S60: 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2. The Nokia 6650 offers HSDPA data, GPS, and memory card slot. It also has a 2 megapixel camera and a QVGA display.

It was also recently announced that the Samsung A237 will be headed for for AT&T's wireless network. This is an entry level handset that comes in a clamshell phone form. The Samsung A7237 has quad-band GSM/EDGE and will offer a VGA camera, dedicated keys for messaging functions, and Bluetooth. Customers will be able to chose from red, blue and black version. Info on the price and availability are not yet available.

AT&T has decided to offer some free phones for the victims of Hurricane Gustav. Around 2,000 AT&T pre-paid GoPhone's will be offered for free to customers coming from government-mandated evacuation areas. AT&T retail stores in the San Antonio and Houston regions affected by Hurricane Gustav will offer free phones 15 minutes of airtime. Those eligible have to hurry because these phones will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Sprint

The wireless network provider has recently announced that the rugged Motorola i365 will be added to its handset lineup. It will be offered to Sprint customers for $90 with new agreement. The Motorola i365 is a tough handset that can resist humidity, blowing rain, dust, shock and vibration. This bar-style Sprint phone is headed for the iDEN network and supports PTT functions. The Motorola i365 will offer GPS and Bluetooth.

Sprint recently announced the addition of two new entry-level Samsung clamshell phones. The and M220 from Samsung offers Bluetooth, dual displays, and speakerphones. The Samsung M320 flip phone will be offered for $30 after a new agreement and rebates and will come in red. The Samsung M320 clamshell will sport a 1.38-inch display and a VGA camera. It will come in blue and is priced the same as the M320.

RadioShack has also started selling the Samsung Instinct for Sprint. The Instinct is Sprint's top phone and an Apple iPhone alternative.

Cricket

This wireless network provider has recently launched a new video service for only $5 per month. Customers will get access to unlimited to video clips with this new Cricket video plan. However, this new service can only be added to select Cricket phones. The average length of the video clips are between 1 and 4 minutes. T-Mobile 3G Wireless Network Launch in Las Vegas and More

According to Phonescoop, T-Mobile has made an announcement regarding the launch of its 1700MHz AWS 3G network in the Las Vegas market . T-Mobile customers within the Las Vegas market will be able to use the 1700MHz spectrum for voice and UMTS 3G data services if they own 3G handsets. T-Mobile's 3G mobile phones will reportedly find the 3G network automatically.

The mobile phone carrier has also announced some of its plans to expand its 3G footprint to 20 additional markets before this year ends. T-Mobile is also getting ready to release information on an HSDPA-capable phone and other devices.

Recently, the FCC has approved Verizon Wireless proposal to acquire Rural Cellular Corporation. Rural Cellular Corporation is a a regional network operator that operates both CDMA and GSM networks. The company serves over 716,000 subscribers in parts of New England, the Mid West, the South and the Pacific Northwest. However, one of the two companies will have to divest wireless licenses and assets in six different markets to complete this deal.

Let's move on to competition between wireless network operators. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are said to be going toe to toe in the international plans market.

Both of the mobile phone carriers have recently released new offers and expanded their international data plans. This move has been seen as an attempt to exploit the international crowd for the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

AT&T has released two new wireless plans, one for smartphone users and one for PC card users. It has also expanded its global voice and data coverage with international data roaming and increased its roaming coverage to 120 cruise ships.

According to thius story from unwiredview.com, there were some reports that Apple will release a red version of the iPhone 3G. The reports also say that iPhone fanatics can get their hands this holiday season1 Well, Merry Christmas!

Looking at the red iPhone images from Macblogz. com, I can say that it looks great. It reminds of a sleek and sexy Ferrari or Santa Clause. Unfortunately, these reports are still unconfirmed. But Iphone fans dreaming of having a red iPhone should not despair because Apple might realize that they boost sales by introducing more colors for the iPhone.

Here's another iPhone report. According to a story revolving around some mobile phone sites, an iPhone 2.1 beta tester has found references to a copy and paste feature under the ‘Localizable.strings’ file in the WebKit framework. This is exciting because the iPhone 3G has been criticized for its a lack of the copy/paste feature which is standard for most smartphones.

However, some have dismissed tis report because those references may have merely carried over from the existing WebKit frameworks that are used for Windows PC and Mac application development. So nothing is definite yet on this report but I'm sure that Apple fans are hoping to get the copy/paste feature on the iPhone in the near future.

But enough with AT&T's iPhone. Here's some info on AT&T. The wireless network operator has recently filed a petition with the FCC to halt the merger of Sprint's Xohm Wimax service with Wimax provider Clearwire.

AT&T wants Clearwire and Sprint to demonstrate that the merger serves the public interest just like any other providers would have to do. This means that AT&T wants this deal to be examined thoroughly because because Clearwire is to be backed by heavyweights Google, Intel, and cable companies.

Lastly, here's some bad news for AT&T subscribers who want to have the BlackBerry Bold. According to BlackBerryNews, the AT&T BB Bold is now being scheduled for a launch on September 1. What's so bad about this report?

Well, the Bold was supposed to be released on was July, then it was moved to mid-August. And now it being set up for a September 1 release. Some say that the released depends on how quickly the wireless network operator can train personnel on the phone.

Recent Wireless Network Operator News

Here's some recent news on wireless network operators that I've picked up while surfing the web. Let's begin with a story on free mobile Internet.

Well, a month ago, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin made a proposal that companies that acquire the spectrum should devote at least 25% to free Internet access for 95% of the country . This is a good proposal for the subscribers because they would be given free online access. After all, nobody would turn down a great offer like free Internet access. But mobile phone carriers may not agree to this proposal.

Sure enough, some wireless network operators and telecommunication companies have reuquested an audience with with the FCC this week to discuss a spectrum auction in which the winning bidders would have to offer free Internet. AT&T, Motorola, T-Mobile and Texas Instruments were mentioned as among those who met with the FCC regarding this issue.

These wireless network operators and companies are concerned that companies that want their products to be used internationally may be affected if the free Internet model will be implemented.

T-Mobile feeles threatened by the FCC proposal because the wireless network operator's devices operate on airwaves next to those that the FCC wants to put up for auction. There is a chance that activity on that band will interfere with T-Mobile's wireless Internet services. The company wants to request testing to ensure that the proposal will not endanger it's wireless services.

As a result of these request from telecom companies and carriers, Martin said last week that the sale could be postponed until next year. This is too bead because I would really enjoy free mobile Internet access.

Here's another wireless network news involving AT&T. Unfortunately, this is not good news for the carrier. A California retailer has accused AT&T of Nokia of selling a used cellphone as new and have filed a class action lawsuit against them.

The retailer also claims that damage was done when they purchase a brand new Nokia cellphone full the full prize but received a used or reconditioned Nokia cellphone indeed. A used or reconditioned handset is worth substantially less than a brand new unit so the complainant felt that a suit is necessary.

Apple iPhone owners access music, e-mail and web browsing services in the more than 17,000 hotspots in AT&T's WiFi wireless network. AT&T's hotspots can be found in various airports, hotels, universities, convention centers, sports centers, restaurants, bookstores, and supermarkets. I'm sure you'll have no problem finding one in your area.

This is one probably an effort to encourage more people to get the iPhone. Not that people aren't buying the 3G device. So many people are trying to get their hands on the iPhone that various wireless network operators around the world are running out of units. In fact, Apple recently announced that they have sold a million iPhone 3G just a few days after the new iPhone hit the market.

Apple's App store has also proven to be quite successful. Millions of people have responded to the store and they have downloaded to their hearts content. The Apple App store offers affordable applications and some are ven for free. Some experts say that this store sets Apple's product from it's rivals. With the App store, iPhone users can choose the application they want to have on their handsets.

However, there are also some concerns with the dwindling supplies of the iPhone 3G. There was so much anticipation on a faster iPhone that the supply may not keep up with the demand. Some mobile phone experts predict that the current iPhone shortage may last through mid-August. There were also some who said that Apple's initial estimates was inaccurate because the demand proved to be much larger. This is certainly bad news for those who want to get the iPhone 3G as soon as possible. I think a bit of patience will solve this problem. Apple will eventually be able to produce enough units to satisfy the demand.

There was also some news that AT&T and Apple are testing iPhone device software version 2.0.1,for both the iPhone and iPhone 3G. Apparently, testing began prior to the launch of device software 2.0 and the iPhone 3G on July 11th. The known test users have been located to the San Francisco and Atlanta areas. This device software is expected to released to the public in the near future.

I've got another juicy bit of wireless network information scoop. This time it's for Sprint subscribers. Now, according to the folks at wmexperts.com, Sprint may be launching the HTC Touch Diamond on September 2.

The HTC Touch Diamond has been one of the most anticipated handsets since it was officially announced last May. Only the 3G iPhone has clearly surpassed it in terms of anticipation. It was rumored that Verizon and Sprint will offer the HTC Touch Pro in US soil. Prior rumors and announcements indicate that the HTC Touch Pro will be available in the third quarter. This makes the rumored release date of September 2 plausible.

The source of this info is apparently a slide or internal document that was leaked. The documents contained details and the release dates of several handsets that will be launched by Sprint. Here are the handsets that will be released in September according to the leaked document:

AT&T mobile phone devices and services rumors

According to the mobile phone spies at Boy Genius Report, the Samsung Omina may be coming to AT&T in the third quarter. The Samsung Omnia is a a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device with a 5 megapixel camera with face detection. It also has quad-band EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, 3.2″ WQVGA touch screen, Bluetooth, and either 8GB or 16GB of internal memory. The rumors also indicate that the Samsung Omnia for AT&T will offer Mobile TV, AT&T Navigator and other services.

Here's more interesting mobile phone scoop for AT&T subscribers. According to GearDiary.com, AT&T's roadmap has been leaked and the info suggest that a number of exciting new handsets will be released in the coming months. Verizon Wireless May Merge with Alltel

Here's some explosive wireless network controller news. According to a Reuters article, Verizon Wireless may be able to surpass AT&T as the top US mobile phone service provider if it succeeds in negotiating a merge with Alltel Corp.

Alltel Corp is one of the top rural mobile service provider in the US. The source of this scoop revealed that Verizon is offering to but Alltel for bout $27 billion in debt and cash. However, the $27 billion valuation could be comprised of mostly debt and a smaller amount of cash.

This merger will certainly have a significant effect in the wireless network operator industry. Alltel had more than 13 million customers at the end of the first quarter which means that a merge with Verizon will spawn a company with more than 80 million customers. AT&T, is considered the biggest U.S. wireless service based on customers with 71 million subscribers but will fall in second place should this merger becomes complete.

The source of this wireless network info also divulged that the ownership structure of Verizon Wireless would be altered if the deal is completed. Fifty-five percent of the company is owned by Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc owns the rest.

Needless to say, this development was met by surprise. The timing of this deal was unexpected since Verizon did not make any move when private equity investors bought Alltel about a year ago. However, Verizon Wireless expanding through an acquisition makes sense. Some experts also believe that Verizon may be able to operate Alltel more efficiently than Alltel. As expected with these mega deals, both parties wanted to limit the information about the merger. Verizon declined to release comment on the matter while Alltel representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Mobile phone industry experts expect that a close review from U.S. antitrust authorities and regulators at the Federal Communications Commission will be conducted if Verizon proceeds to purchase of Alltel.

Finally! We can finally get a taste for AT&T's long delayed mobile TV service.

It seems that the wireless network will finally launch their often delayed mobile TV service in May. An anonymous source within the company has informed the mobile phones spies at BGR that AT&T will officially launch the service on May 4.

But wait. That's not all. The source also revealed the detail's of the wireless network's mobile TV service, including the channels for the services. The wireless network's mobile TV service will be officially known as AT&T Mobile TV and will become available in three main packages. Let us explore these packages.

The wireless network's subscribers can choose the cheapest service called Mobile TV Limited. This service will only cost subscribers $13 in fees per month but it offers a very limited selection of channels. Fox Mobile, CBS Mobile, NBC, and NBC News will be included in the Mobile TV Limited package.

AT&T's Mobile TV Basic package will offer 8 channels for a fee of $15 a month. Wireless network subscribers will enjoy great mobile TV experience while they flip through Fox Mobile, CBS mobile, NBC, NBC News, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, CNN Mobile and ESPN.

I have picked up this interesting wireless network rumor while surfing the web. This enticing scoop involves LG's iPhone response or killer. It seems every mobile phone maker is trying to come up with an answer to Apple's gem. Nokia has the "Tube", Samsung recently announced the "Instinct" and LG has the Voyager.

Well, I can't blame cell phone manufacturers and wireless networks with trying to launch the true iPhone slayer. After all, it's probably the hottest mobile phone on the market. The number of fake iPhones in the world market should be a good proof of this Apple handset's dominance. But enough with the introduction. Let's get on to the meat of this juicy wireless network rumor.

Currently, Verizon has the exclusive rights to the LG Voyager or VX10000. However, some rumors have surfaced that Sprint and AT&T may also be able to add the device to their mobile phone line ups. The LG Voyager has performed well since it was launched so it will certainly draw some consumers.

As basis for this rumor, the Electronic Times quoted an LG official making this statement,

"We plan to expand the supply of Voyager to AT&T and Sprint within this year. That will lay the strong foundation for LG in the North American market."

Well, that statement is indeed tantalizing. It's very probable that LG is trying to expand the success of their handset by offering it on other wireless networks. However, there are also a few puzzling facets to this rumor.

Spring Nextel is trying to recover from various problems and the LG Voyager can help them retain their fickle subscribers. However, Sprint has been working with Samsung to launch another iPhone response in the Instinct. The wireless network was reportedly willing to spend a hundred million to market the Samsung Instinct. Launching the Voyager and the Instinct may cause some conflict. Then again, having two high-end and highly touted mobile phones may be the part of solution to Sprint's problems.

AT&T is already the sole distributer of the iPhone so it is puzzling why they would offer an "iPhone killer". Maybe they want to offer new alternatives to their customers. It would be interesting to see what happens if AT&T offers both of these handsets.

Wireless Networks to Participate in FCC Cell Phone Alert System

Many mobile phone sites on the web has featured a story on the FCC making plans on a nationwide emergency alert system using text messages on mobile devices. The commission is trying to enable people to communicate emergency situations by sending text messages to mobile phones.

Top wireless networks including Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile and Verizon have expressed that they are willing to take part in the program. However, the wireless networks strongly request the FCC to adopt an advisory committee's recommendations. The recommendations include, limiting warnings to English and 90 characters in length.

The commission has also decided to allow each participating wireless network to choose its own technical solution for deploying emergency warnings to customers. Special provisions for disabled individuals were also made by the considerate commission.

Well, the Federal Communications Commission approved technical guidelines for a voluntary mobile-phone emergency alert system according to the request of participating wireless network. Unfortunately, a federal coordinator has not yet been appointed for the new public warning system.

The delay began when the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA wanted the FCC to delay key decisions in the rulemaking early this year. The reason for the delay was a legal glitch according to the agency.

The agency wrote the FCC concerning a presidential order given last year that gave FEMA delegated authority over the emergency alert system involving presidential activations. However, the agency do not have enough authority to be involved with critical components of the commercial mobile alert system during non-emergency periods. This components include the trust model, aggregator and gateway functions.

In this issue, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin released this statement,

“By adopting technical requirements for the wireless alerting system today, we are enabling wireless providers that choose to participate in this system to begin designing their networks to deliver mobile alerts. It would have been better, of course, if we had a federal entity in place now to take on the role of alert aggregator and gateway. We are hopeful that we have initiated the dialogue that will allow an appropriate federal entity to assume that central role in an expeditious manner."

Some of the officials involved in this project expressed being disheartened by FEMA's unwillingness to fulfill the role since the agency was intimately involved in developing the idea of a unified federal gateway/aggregator. FEMA reportedly suggest that it would be unable to perform this key function for statutory and other reasons.

It seems that a firm candidate for a position that is essential to launching the alert system is missing getting this system. The FCC may be forced to work with its fellow agencies and the Congress to find a federal entity that can fulfill the controversial function due to FEMA’s recent and unexpected interpretation of its statutory authority.

I like the idea of this alert system based on text messages. Mobile phones are so prevalent today so a system based on text messages can be effective. Wireless networks have also expressed interest in the program which is also good news in my opinion. All AT&T SmartPhones may be 3G Capable in Months

Here's some interesting news for smartphone fans. At a recently press conference, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega expressed that the company's smartphone line up would be 3G capable in months. If the wireless network stays true to this statement, then the 3g iPhones and BlackBerry devices will be available in months.

AT&T's CEO made this statement when a member of the press beagn to lament that the wireless network's BlackBerrys do not have HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access). However, some analyst expressed doubt on this statements because CEO's have been known to make unfulfilled announcements. And when pressed by questions about the impending 3G capabilities of the iPhone and BlackBerrys, de la Vega simply reiterated the same statement.

Anyway, here's a list of the smartphones and PDA's in AT&T's lineup. Hopefully these will all be in 3G "within months."

Exciting Wireless Network News and Surprises Expected at CTIA 2008

CTIA 2008 is about to start and mobile phone enthusiasts are expecting a lot from the mobile phone trade show. What so exciting about the CTIA? Well, it one of the best venues where exciting mobile phone news are revealed.

Mobile phone manufacturers and wireless networks often use the CTIA as a spring board to launch industry changing mobile phones. I'm sure every carrier subscriber is excited about the announcement of the new devices that will be sold by their wireless network.

Some exciting mobile phone news have been announced just before the CTIA began and undoubtedly there will be more scoop when the event begins. Let give you some info on the exciting news that were released just before the mobile phone trade show began.

First off, it was announced that Verizon Wireless will release the CDMA network compatible, BlackBerry Curve 8330 in the next few weeks. This silver finished smartphone offers true 3G support unlike GSM models offered by AT&T and T-Mobile. It also supports EVDO mobile broadband which makes it faster than the EDGE supported BlackBerry Curves currently on the market.

The BalckBerry 8330 will support VZ Navigator navigation service as part of it's GPS feature since it will be available on Verizon Wireless. The other features on this smartphone includes a media management software developed by Roxio and a 2-magepixel camera. Once CTIA begins, more details regarding this device will be released.

It was also announced that the Motorola Q9c will be available on Alltel Wireless and US Cellar.A new lime green version of the Motorola Q9c will be added to the carriers' handset line ups. The traditional black Q9c for consumers who may not like the new version. Alltel and US Cellular consumers can begin purchasing the smartphone this summer.

Sprint also launched a similar device a few months ago. The Mtorola Q9c is powered by Windows mobile 6 and offers a 1.3 megapixel camera, 128Mb Flash memory, Bluetooth with A2DP support, EVDO and other features. More details on the release dates and pricing of the device will be available in the next few weeks.

Wireless Networks Reviews part Two

This is the sequel to my attempt to provide some useful reviews on the services offered by various wireless networks. these reviews were mostly based on what consumers say on a particular carrier. L provided reviews on Verizon Wireless, US Cellular and AT&T in my first post.

Let us begin this sequel with a review of Virgin Mobile USA. This mobile phone network is known as a consumer champion. Of course, that doesn't mean that Virgin Mobile customers do not file complaints against their carrier. Like most wireless networks Virgin Mobile also receive complaints but surveys have shown that the company provides great consumer satisfaction and customer service.

Many consumers also like the fact that the network offers a wide variety of phones. Consumers like to have a lot of option so offering plenty of mobile phone models will sit well with consumers. A wide selection means that users will be more likely to find the most suitable handset to fit a certain lifestyle or personality.

Virgin Mobile Customers also like the freedom to roam anywhere in the country without incurring roaming fees that is offered by the company. But this offer is also limited because devices will only access Virgin Mobile cell phone towers. A mobile phone is virtually useless if the owner is in an area that is not covered by the wireless network.

Virgin Mobile also offers affordable and flexible mobile phone plans. Customers can get plans for less than fifteen bucks and do not have to worry about yearly contracts. Virgin mobile plans do not require contracts so there are not a lot of disputes.

There are also some negative feedbacks from Virgin Mobile consumers. For instance, Virgin Mobile is not yet offering GSM technology in their handsets. Consumers are unable to send packets of information to their recipients because of the absence of this technology.

The lack of relationship with other networks is also hurting some of their consumers. The network offers a wide coverage but they are still unable to offer service in some areas of the country. this means that consumers have to switch to other networks in order to use their phones.

Let us proceed with Alltel Wireless. This wireless network provider is known for proving quality service in the states that are covered by its network. Consumers in the 35 states being served by this carrier experience good call quality.

Altell also maintains good ties with other wireless networks so consumers can connect with their family and friends using thwe networks of other carriers. Customers have also expressed that this company provides quality customer service.

This company is also credited with offering generous benfits in their plans such us unlimited mintues during weeekends and nighttime. There are also a wide variety of Alltel services that are available to customers. For instance, laptop users can benefit from the networks WiFi service that grants online access in many places across the country.

However, Alltel's limited service to only 35 states can also bring problems to customers. Limited area coverage often translates to high roaming costs. Most Alltel special services are also unable in states not covered by the carrier. That means that customers may not benefit from Alltel promotions if they are out side the carrier's network.

Wireless Networks Reviews part One

I have made several post on this blog that offers information on how users feel about certain mobile phones.These reviews were offered by users who posted them on the Internet. Now, I thought it would be interesting to offer a review of wireless networks or mobile phone providers.

Let us begin with Verizon Wireless. Sources on the web describe this wireless network as having the top score in call quality. This means that the subscribers of Verizon Wireless suffer from less drop calls and enjoy great calling experience.

This network is also known for being able to serve a wide range of customers. Verizon offers services that are suitable for corporate customers and non business subscribers. Many sources also credit this wireless carrier for the discount packages it offers to customers.

Since no company is perfect, Verizon has also been criticized for its shortcomings. The wireless network has been chastised for having poor coverage in some areas. Some customers have complained that the network has sub par performance in their location.

Some observers also had commented that Verizon wireless plans are more expensive than most wireless networks. Perhaps they feel that the quality service that the carrier provide does not justify the high cost.

Let us move on to US Cellular. This carrier is known for being the top regional wireless network. This company is credit as providing good customer service to their subscribers. The company takes pride in making their customers feel that their needs will be satisfied.

US Cellular also receive points for the extras they provide on their services. This is also a contributing factor in the company's reputation of providing commendable customer service. Extras and discounts are a good tool for making customers feel that they have received more than their money's worth.

Unfortunately, this wireless network also has its share of criticisms. Some say that the price of their services is also high. Compared with other networks, this company's plans have similar or higher price tags.

Since US Cellular is a regional carrier, its network is limited. It can only provide services in 26 states and most of them are in the Midwest. This can be a problem for customers who have friends and family in states not served by US Cellular. They make be charged for roaming fees when they contact them.

Let us finish this first part with a review of AT&T. This wireless network is considered as one of the giants of the mobile phone industry. With more than sixty million customers, this company has a lot of clout in the industry.

AT&T offers great service and provides good calling quality. The wireless network would not be able to maintain millions of customers if it offers poor service and great products. This carrier offers unique services that are unmatched by other networks. Mobile phone customers subscribe to AT&T because of the great and unique options available.

The company's ability to offer the best and the latest mobile phone products is also a factor in the company's dominance in the industry. Nothing attract customers more than the temptation of being able to get the latest and hottest handsets. The Apple iPhone for example, pulls a massive number of customers to the network.

Nevertheless, the company has also received complaints from dissatisfied customers and reviewers. One of the recurring complaints that are hurled at the network is the delay in voice message delivery. many customers experienced that the voice messages they send are not received by the intended recipient at the expected time.

Some customers have also complained that the company does not treat customers well. The quality of the company's customer service have been questioned. The attitude of the AT&T's service representatives have been the cause of many complaints.

LG Glimmer Coming to Alltel Wireless

I came upon an exciting piece of wireless network news for Alltel subscribers. The interesting thing is that the source of this information is from Asia.

LG Korea has made it known that the Glimmer or the LG-AX830 will be made available on Alltel wireless. The fliers about the release of this mobile phone have started appear last month. But, the news was confirmed only a few days ago with the announcement made by LG Korea.

The LG Glimmer has not yet appeared on the wireless network's site but the press release indicate that subscribers can get the phone in the next few weeks. I know that Alltel subscribers will be delighted by these news and are excited to get their hands in this nice device.

The LG Glimmer may not be familiar to many mobile phone fans so let me offer a brief description of the phone and its features. The LG-AX830 is similar to the LG Shine in appearance but offers its own unique appeal. The device is in the form of a slider and is Bluetooth capable like the latest handsets. The device is powered by an 800 mAh battery that gives users up to 7 days of standby time and 3.5 hours of talk time.

For subscribers who want to take pictures, this phone is a good choice because it comes with a 2-megapixel camera. The wireless network's new device is also a good entertainment device because it has a media player that can cope with MP3, WMA, AAC and AAC+ audio files. Another neat thing about the LG Glimmer's media player is that when it is hooked up to a PC via USB, it shows up as a mass storage device.

The handset also features a 2.8" 262K color 240×400 touchscreen that gives it a unique appeal. It can accept 4GB microSD cards and user can use the speaker-independent voice control when they make calls or listen to music. HTC Mogul from Sprint: First EV-DO Rev. A Mobile Phone

According to this article from Yahoo news!, Sprint is planning to release a software update for the HTC Mogul. This update will make the Mogul the first EV-DO Rev. A mobile device. Before I proceed I think it well be helpful to give more information on the HTC Mogul and the EV-DO Rev. A wireless networks.

Let us begin with Sprint Nextel's HTC Mogul. This mobile phone is the upgraded version of the older HTC 6700 PDA phone. Compared with the older model, the Mogul is lighter and thinner. It weighs just 5.8 oz and its dimensions are 110 x 59 x 18.5 mm.

The HTC Mogul is also updated to be compatible with Windows Mobile 6. It also features an assisted-slide keyboard, stereo Bluetooth, and a 2 megapixel camera which are absent in the HTC 6700 PDA phone.

After reading some reviews from people who have used the Mogul, I learned that it performs well and it's an improvement from the older HTC 6700. Users love the Mogul's qwerty keyboard that performs well for data purposes and they also like the increased memory.

Now let us move on to the EV-DO Rev. A wireless network. The name is the short version of Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A. This network is the faster version of the EV-DO Rev. 0 wireless network. It is currently operated by two major wireless networks namely, Sprint and Verizon.

This wireless network is the counterpart of AT&T's HSDPA or High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Both wireless networks are listed as having similar speed. This network has only been used for laptop cards so the update makes the HTC Mogul from Sprint the first EV-DO Rev. A mobile phone.

How will Sprint's HTC Mogul perform after the update. Well, the reports say the the update will enable the device to connect to a faster data network. Connecting the device to the wireless network will double its download speeds and boost its upload speed.

However, since the EV-DO Rev. A improves upload speeds it is very important to laptop users but less so for mobile phones. Nevertheless, the improvements that connecting to the network bring will make the upgrade worth it.

AT&T to Launch Nokia N95?

I found an interesting wireless network article as I was surfing the web today. This phonedog.com article says that there are rumors that the Nokia N95 may be coming to AT&T.

The article also indicated that the Nokia N95 maybe available in AT&T outlets during the second quarter of this year. As these are still rumors, it is still unsure whether wireless network will launch the N95 or the newer 8GB model. Let me give a short preview on these phones just in case you are unfamiliar with them.

The Nokia N95 Super Phone

The N95 is Nokia's flagship Nseries mobile phone. This smartphone has a an enormous features list that is packed into a compact slider form. The phone has a large QVGA display with slide-activated landscape mode. It also has a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with high-quality video capture.

I also scanned some user reviews about the Nokia N95 so I'll give a brief summery. Users generally love this device because of the screen, the 5MP camera, high quality videos, and the web browser. Cool Nokia Nokia 6650 Smartphone Coming to T-Mobile

I just found out that the Nokia 6650 smartphone will be coming exclusively to T-Mobile. Unfortunately, I have no ides when this phone will be available in the US but it will be released by the wireless network in the third quarter of this year. This wireless network news was announced at the CeBIT tradeshow in Hanover, Germany.

No information on the retail prices have been released but customers will crave this phone no matter what the price. I wasn't even able to find a picture of the smartphone on the Internet. The wireless network acquired this mobile phone as part of a general plan to get smartphones into the hands of multimedia consumers. These customers are willing to pay the premiums associated with advanced services so this is a good strategy for T-Mobile.

Since there is not a lot of information on when the Wireless network will launch the Nokia's 6650, let us just discuss the details of the device. Some sources describe the device as a feature-rich handset. It was designed to satisfy mobile users who expect an experience comparable to what they get in fixed environments.

Sprint Nextel Continues to Struggle

Sprint Nextel looks to score big with the launching of the "Simply Everything" unlimited wireless plan but there is no denying that the company is still struggling. The company has taken major losses in profit and stock value. Predictions indicate that the wireless network will also suffer from major customer defections.

Let us begin with the losses recently reported by Sprint Nextel. The wireless network reported that for its fourth fiscal quarter it suffered losses worth $29.5 billion. This bleeding is the effect of continued decrease in the number of Sprint subscribers and the write-down from the wireless network's 2005 acquisition of Nextel. As a result, the company will not pay dividend in the foreseeable future.

The problems will only worsen as the wireless network estimates that they will lose more than a million customers who pay monthly bills in the first quarter. One of the causes of these defections is the fact that Sprint was unable to lay out a plan to improve conditions. the wireless network also ranks among the lowest inters of customer satisfaction and service quality.

The stocks of the carrier also suffered due to the report of the the loss in profit and the continued decrease in subscribers. The wireless networks stock was down 10.4% to $8.02 when they reported the losses. A write down of the value of Nextel Communications Inc. is also consider as a major factor in the profit loss and the devaluation of the company's stocks.

Sprint has continued to struggle after it merged with Nextel. The acquisition was suppose to increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) of its subscribers but that plan has not been accomplished. The mobile phone industry remains as a very lucrative business and so far Sprint has suffered from the intense competition.

Fortunately, all is not lost for Sprint Nextel. Although the company is struggling, efforts are being done to turn things around. These efforts is headed by the new CEO and the new " Simply Everything" wireless plan will help stem the flow of customer defections. The layoff of about 4,000 employees and closing of more than a hundred 125 retail outlets will also help the company to recover.
